Agreed, but it's a chicken/egg problem. People haven't realized how to monetize chargers yet. How much do you think it costs to install a typical gas station, all in, with 8 pumps? I'd guess $2-4million.
Now imagine a similar installation with one or two Tesla MegaPacks and canopies covered in solar panels, connected to the grid. Your vehicle charging station can push/pull from/to the grid and charge vehicles at the same time. Solar on the canopies would reduce the grid pull costs. The attached cafe/convenience store would generate significant revenue I'd think. A Tesla Megapack is around $1.2million/ea and is capable of powering 3600 homes for an hour. You could charge quite a few cars with that. 10-20 charging stations per megapack should be possible for about $2-3million.
