That hard-core MAGA base doesn't care if Trump sounds incoherent or even completely senile.
But they are not the difference makers in this election. It's that very thin slice of persuadable voters in so-called swing states.
A group that rarely tunes in until just before its time to vote. And they may be shocked by what theu hear from Trump.
That's why I think it was brilliant of the Biden campaign to push for a first debate this month. Unprecedented for it to be this early. Let the people see Trump now. Blow up his pre-convention buzz.

Trump has been ranting like an uneducated, narcissistic, pathological liar for years now.
Skewered for it unrelentingly on countless platforms in every form of media.
His preposterousness could not have been writ any larger or trumpeted any louder. It has been surgically dissected and put in the simplest terms possible with pretty color pictures.
24/7/365. He is not a black box. He is not a silver tongued deceiver. Trump is anything BUT an unknown quantity.
The number of those who don’t know who and what he is and will be shocked into sitting on their hands will not be enough to make a difference.
I do have some small hope for there being enough of those out there cowed by the raucous, bullying, glassy eyed zealots to express themselves, except to nod and chant the phrase of the day, that will quietly stay home.
Enough out there, spurred by the ravaging of women’s right to control their own bodies or that fear for the future of some young, loved LGBTQ family member or acquaintance, that will vent their disgust behind the voting booth curtain.
And of course enough sane Americans that still value the good things in this country and understand what’s at stake and will forge past the hurdles put in place to prevent them from being heard.
And that it will survive whatever onslaught, legal and extralegal, that has most certainly been being prepared for years now.
