Mostly it benefits a few, the coaches and administrators. With the NCAA allowing student athletes to get paid for some things lately, a minority of athletes may get more out of college than just a degree. For the rest of the students in most cases college sports are just a cost, often hidden in the tuition or fees they pay to attend school. For example the last figures I could find for the university I retired from had each student paying over $600 a year to subsidize the varsity sports. Men's football took the single largest amount, even with appearance payments from away games in the $1 million range. The administrators made the varsity programs appear to break even, didn't include costs to pay off bonds used to construct varsity only training and related facilities.
