I think we're all going on the assumption that when he copied the files over, they got corrupted in the transfer. Chances are good then that he will not be able to modify the files in any way to recover them, as they're corrupted copies. If they are all corrupted (as they seemingly are, based on his description), I doubt that anything will be able to open them -- never say never, but I wouldn't count on it.
So... I think we're all going on the assumption that since his copies are corrupted, his best bet is to attempt to recover the originals in an uncorrupted form.
