With contacts only costing about $3 a piece for disposables, I just stash them around. One in my car, one in Mrs. Tats' car, one in my backpack, one in my desk- you get the point. It is easier for me since I have the same Rx in both eyes, but you can always just pick the stronger power if they are close. If a contact gets so bad that it is irritating my eye, I just prefer to pitch it and get a fresh one. There is no problem with rinsing a contact in tap water, but it will quickly deform due to the unique properties of the polymers used and might sting when you insert it back into your eye and will take a couple of seconds to soak up your tears and reform.
Here's a tip to save a bunch of money. When you put your contacts in the case, fill it with multipurpose to disinfect and clean. Shake the case briskly after you seal it up. Then when you go to insert them in the morning, briskly shake the case again. This does an excellent job of cleaning the lens without having to rub. When you remove your lens from the case, rinse with regular saline which is about 1/5 of the cost of multipurpose. Also, Kirkland (Costco) brand multipurpose solution comes in the best bottles I have ever used. When you squeeze you get a nice, strong, pinpoint stream which is good for blasting off the crud. I can't stand that piddle that comes out of most saline bottles.
