You don't have anything to lose per se for signing up for SkyMiles, but be aware that Delta has made it very difficult to redeem your miles. I have 100K left in my account, and we still can't find two available seats to Europe for next year that I can "spend" them on.
You make a very good point about the partner airlines. Very often they'll have redeemable flights when Delta doesn't (and if you get Air France, that means free wine in coach). Partner airlines have exactly the same redemption numbers as Delta itself, you just can't book them online. You have to call Delta to get the partner reservation.
