What were the names/changed name that caused/solved this issue?

The OS uses xxxxxx.xxx -- the .xxx part -- to figure out what type of file. Did you name the folder with '.xxx' ending?

Lastly, many applications on the mac are actually packages, which can look much like folders. Right-click (control-click) on Firefox, for example, to see "Show Package Contents".
