Congrats! I just set a 17" refurb iMac for a family member as well.
If you bought the 1.83 699.00 Apple store refurb, here is a bit of info you might find useful.
Even though it is a core 2 duo, the max ram is NOT 3 gigs as listed on most sites. The non-superdrive/non-bluetooth model is an EDU model, with specs that will NOT allow it to boot with 3 gigs.
Through trial and error, I was able to get it to boot with 2.5 gigs. (one 2 gig stick, one 512 stick)
Ram takes about 2 minutes to add.
