They're going from $2500 for a 4-core 2.66 with 1GB RAM and a supercrap video card to $2300 for a 4-core 2.8 with 2GB RAM and a little better video card. Bigger hard drive too.
I had the same initial reaction as you, and the same rethink as soon as I hit the BTO pages and downgraded a test machine from Octo-core to Quad-core.
At least the low-end BTO machine isn't a complete non-bargain like the old 2.0GHz Quad was. In fact, it'll blow the old 2.66GHz Quad away for the same money as that old 2.0GHz Quad.
And the 2600XT is a lot better than the old 7300GT.
I'll probably buy the Quad with the GeForce 8800GT, whenever I'm ready to fully make the move to Leopard.
