As long as you can itemize, you can take the charitable donation. That means you have to be above the $5,350 standard deduction. A donation of any one item with a value of $250 or above is subject to some additional scrutiny, though, so make sure your friend gives you some kind of receipt for the Cube that will pass IRS muster. It shouldn't be too hard, as long as the receipt includes the information about not for profit, particularly the name and tax number.
