Yep, we got hit by that same cold front over night. Lat night it was 32 degrees F., this morning it was 1 degree F. There were close to 400 event cancellations today. The roads were pretty much useless, yesterday it was warm enough that the roads were wet, the sudden drop in temperature made for a nice ice, and then add blowing snow to the mix and you've got a mess.
There was a 50 car pileup between Muskegon and Grand Rapids that shut I-96 down mostly thanks to whiteout conditions. There was another 30 car pileup south of Grand Rapids on US-131, and yet another pileup by Holland on I-196.
People are idiots. In between the lake effect snow, the sun was shining and you could easily see that the roads were ice. That did not stop two cars from blowing by most of the traffic doing about 55mph. Everybody else was doing between 30-40 mph. Not only the speed, but then they were zig-zagging in between slower traffic. I thought that for sure I'd see one or the other in an accident, but they must have turned off the main road.
