I can say with 99% certainty this is a scam unless Apple changed it's policy in the last 6 months. When Dateline did their program on iPod losses they quoted Apple as having said they do not track iPods, nor will they. They have done one-offs I think, but certainly they do not have a department that coordinates this. Typically "loss prevention" at Fortune 500 companies doesn't mean customer's losing items it means customers/employees STEALING their merchandise and IP.
