Traveling from Ohio to Edisto Beach or Florida I always try to take an extra day to drive the Parkway.
If you do the Parkway in the Autumn for the colorful leaves, go early in the season - the leaves turn early in the mountains. I think there is a website that will tell you peak season.
Spring is real nice too.
They close down parts of it in the winter for cross-country skiing.
There are campgrounds every 50 miles or so managed by the national Park Service. And lots of hiking trails. One of the best things east of the Mississippi.
You don't want to hurry.
