That's why I use a Mini instead.
"Hacking" the ATV is merely adding programs to the OS (ATV runs a version of 10.4).
Unless your mini comes pre-configured to do all that you want it to, then you are "hacking" the mini.
That's a pretty silly argument. Even if the ATV weren't underpowered (which it is), you have to hack an ATV (hacks which can be broken by any Apple software dump) with a patchstick (or remove the drive) to get to the OS and do anything Apple doesn't let you do out of the box. I don't think anybody would consider simply installing software (Perian leaps to mind) on a Mini to be "hacking" it.
