Ching, ching. That is what I did with my EeePC. For just surfing and webmail, there really isn't any difference. If I was going to do anything else, I would want X, but FireFox works just fine under Linux.
Hey, that's what I did as well. What Asus Eee PC do you have? I have a white 901 and it has been pretty fantastic. I use it for a little Google Docs, general web browsing, Skype, and listening to Podcasts. The default distro (Xandros) is pretty basic. I loathe the XP theme and that removable storage shows up as letters. D:, seriously? YUCK!!!
I'm thinking of trying the Ubuntu Netbook Remix instead. I'd like to install and boot from an SD card for testing, but not sure how well this will work. I have an 8GB class 6 SDHC card. I hope that will be speedy enough. Just waiting for Ubuntu 9.04 to be released so I can try the latest and greatest.
