It cost to own a car. 20 year old or 10 year old. Engine install/replace will cost pretty much the same, doesnt matter about the age of the car. (assuming the car was not a limited run, exotic car, or gasp!! a Yugo, etc...). Same for Tranny service. As for car registration, http://www.california-lemon-law-blog.com/2009/05/ca_vehicle_license_fees_set_to.html

I think it's time for a new car. 26 years old and you're trying to fix it? C'mon, help out the economy...

Oh wah... you're crying ? This guy decided the cost to maintain his car was so high that he has it trailered to places he wants to drive it, and flies his private jet there.

It has been running fine since I replaced the engine 5 years ago. And, really, I don't want a monthly car payment. It's the Wife's RAV4 that is reaching the 400,000 miles.

cbelt3,
Yeah, man, I'd be sobbing my eyeballs out if I couldn't afford neither 'toy' but bought them anyhow ... ha. Now this http://fourpastfour.com/2010/01/29/maybe...g-enough/I would.

I don't even understand your question. You're comparing the cost of a replacement engine to license fees?

I think he meant the costs for his vehicle were different relative to the costs for other vehicles.

Registration costs completely vary based on county, let alone state. So it's really hard for anyone to give you an idea why there's a difference without knowing your specific county (and maybe even city.)

Engine costs... for most basic consumer engines, they are only going to go so low. They may even go back up in price a few years down the road.

Trust me I am not complaining about the price as we will be having to pay for my wife's new used engine. I was merely wondering the cost difference.

We are in San Gabriel Valley in the county of Los Angeles, where the sale taxes are much higher than Sta Barbara county even tho' the latter is a much wealthier locale. Many many rich celebs have their 4th, 5th, etc. homes there as well, namely, MJ had his ranch; the Reagan have theirs; Oprah with her mansions.

Even by the cost difference, I'm not sure if you're saying it's too much, or too little.

$200 difference would not be too much if my car was 5 years older than my Wife's car.
