And make that a REAL compass, not a compass app on your smart phone!

I have a Casio pathfinder watch with a compass function on it - does that count?

Nah, get a real one. No batteries needed either.

I used a compass once to find my way out of the woods (literally). We tried to make a shortcut back to our campsite but obviously didn't get that right, then remembered we had a compass and knew the general direction we needed to go to get out and made it fine!

I watch alot of Discovery Channel shows.
The one thing in your pocket you must have is a lighter. Ohhh and some Frito corn chips.

I think I have one somewhere, but this is the watch I will be bringing:

It is solar powered, so it needs no stinkin' batteries!

Add a folded-up crisp $100 bill with your name and emergency info written on it in case someone needs to claim your body.

This is a handy device to keep in your kit. I have one in each of my daypacks and backpacks. It's not a substitute for having high quality dedicated gear but is small, unobtrusive and cheap at about $14.

  • compass
  • whistle
  • flint
  • knife sharpener
  • light

Add a light source, whistle, and bright colored bandana and you've got it Smile

Coat some cotton balls with vaseline and stash in an old prescription bottle. Stuff burns a long time. Better than lint.
