52 Ounces

There is a website over here that compares all products in all supermarkets and checking it out confirms my first thought. The main size of fruit juice, whether it is 'from concentrate' or 'not from concentrate', that is the supermarket own brand is 1 litre and has been for many years. 1 litre is about 34 ounces. A larger size is the 1.5 litre which is 52 ounces. Apart from the small individual drink size they are the sizes and they haven't changed for a very long time so no you can easily see if the price per volume changes. Many of the branded juice companies also use those sizes however Tropicana and Innocent seem to use any size but the standard ones so even though it might look similar to the other 1 litre containers theirs might have (quick check) 950ml, 920ml, 790ml, 820ml and others. The ones that look like 1.5l are 1.4l or 1.3l.

We have done taste testing of juice from all the main supermarkets and are very happy with Aldi which turns out to be the cheapest.

I'm currently in central Florida. OJ prices here are crazy high (IMHO). Sheez, the damned fruit is grown here; transportation costs are MUCH lower than say markets that are hundreds (or thousands) of miles away. That and, the oranges grow on trees! It's not like they're made of gold.

I felt the same way when I was going to bring home a couple of cans of macadamia nuts, just like a '50 tourist from the states. LOL. But then I heard they weren't process in Hawaii, so there's that.

Then, as already mentioned, consumers are shorted on quantity.

Yes, it's ice cream cartons all over again.

It bugs the heck out of me that they subtly downsize, more like sneakily.

But then 'New! Smaller size for the same money!' wouldn't be an easy ad campaign.

As I posted a few days back; frozen concentrate (not just of orange) is almost impossible to find now in my area.

I haven't looked at frozen concentrate in years, so haven't any idea about that. I was referring to the cartons of OJ made from concentrate as opposed to "not from concentrate".

As a side note, when containers of orange juice, "not from concentrate", first became available it was distinctly fresher tasting. But as the balance has switched to mostly that available in stores here over the last decade or so, the taste has become less "fresh".

I am also in Central Florida and I get the high prices due to processing but what I don't get is the high prices on fresh citrus. whether oranges or grapefruit, it is about $1/lb on sale. Apples are often cheaper than oranges despite having to be shipped from Michigan or Washington.

I just mentioned this thread to my wife and we looked in the fridge and yes, all bottles are 52 oz. She didn't even notice when she went shopping.

I noticed this at Trader Joe's, because they never had a 59 ounce container of OJ. They went straight from 64 ounces down to 52, so the change in size was obvious. They also changed the shape of the container.

When they changed the carton size from 64 to 59 oz (1.75 l actually), they just made the carton slightly shorter. With an increased amount of airspace in the carton, it was barely noticeable as smaller unless you put the two containers side by side. They used the "excuse" of it being metric, not even bothering to try with the latest decrease to 52 oz.

64 to 59: 5 oz less, or 7.8%

59 to 52: 7 oz less, or 11.9%

So this one is significant compared to the last one.

and if TJ went from 64 straight to 52, that is 12 oz less or 18.75% in one single shot
