Savester,

You're _assuming_ everyone remembers to off-load their media, you're assuming everyone knows exactly what media they want to access at a given time and you're assuming 256GB is enough for them. You're making lots of assumptions which do not necessarily reflect how people use their phones.

Robert

Yeah, also some of us are too lazy to remember to backup that often. FWIW, the iCloud system gives SO many opportunities for regular backups / offload data, etc... I set all my family members to automagical backups years ago. Never looked back.

cbelt,

That's if you trust the could system and whether or not it is suitable for backing up everythingt you have on the phone. That isn't necessarily the case. iCloud can't even sync contacts properly between three Macs, an iPhone and a tablet. Something like that should be dead simple and reliable. It isn't. Far from. If Apple's cloud systems can't get that right, I can't trust them as the only backup for anything else, especially anything on my computers or phone.

The only thing I worry about saving on my iPhone is pictures. I have them go automatically to iCloud, Amazon and Google. So far, so good (find some wood to knock on!).

I recently got the base 12 Pro with 128GB. The reason being I previously had the 6s with 128GB. When I traded in the 6s for the 12 Pro, the 6s had well over 3K photos and videos on it, along with a good sized music library, dozens of apps I never used and it still had quite a bit of storage available.

So unless you're shooting all the time in RAW and doing loads of long videos, I think you will have more than enough storage with 256GB.

Just adding one more comment on capacity needs for recent iOS devices - the offloading options for underused apps is also a great way Apple has added to manage the onboard storage to free up for photos and movies etc.

This. I myself got the 512GB, because in my experience, one can never have too much storage. I like to have my entire music and photo library on my phone, and do not trust ANY cloud options as being safe storage.

PeterB,

Exactly. I went for the 512GB model iPhone 11 Pro. A 256GB might have covered my usage but I know over time I'm gonna want that extra space. I want my entire music library available at all times and I take _tons_ of photos and videos. Although I regularly offload and backup, I still want to make sure I have more than ample storage available at all times now and for as long as I use the phone. I don't replace phons often, so that could be another 3, 4 or 5 years.

Lossless audio rips take up a fair amount of space.

Yup. I don't trust any "cloud" system.
