If I were to switch to a full EV at this point in my life it would be with the knowledge that for some excursions I would need to rent an ICE vehicle.

I also agree that there will be times where an ICE vehicle is just the best tool right now.
But we are also about to go all-EV this month.

Long trips are still ICE-y. It’s all infrastructure.

EV charging is getting better all the time.
When I first started driving a Tesla in 2015, it was more difficult to do long trips. Since then I’ve driven over 200,000 miles and done five, over 4000 mile road trips. For the last two years, Tesla has embarked on a massive roll out of new super charger locations. When you look at the amount of growth that they’ve had, and realize that the complexity of getting Chargers built is fairly complex, it’s amazing that they can implement as many as they have. Between securing land, permits, and utility company transformers, it is amazing. This website keeps track of super chargers that are in the permit process, the construction process or open. One example is Quartzite, AZ, near the California border, Tesla just opened 86 charging stalls, adding to the existing 36. Yes, there are still some rural areas that are challenges, but you can usually find a slow charger for hotel overnight charging. ABetterRoutePlanner and PlugShare are a must for pre trip planning. Here is the Supercharger build out. Make sure you also click on the map tab. Blue Dots indicate they are in the permit process. Orange dots indicate in construction. Red indicates open. https://supercharge.info/changes

Borah than Twin Falls, so no help. Looking at plugshare, I don't even think there are any level 2 chargers I would trust (maybe an RV park?). Boise, Idaho to Borah Peak campground, Mackie, I think is what it's called. |
