I would prefer data privacy legislation tighter than the EU has. Cut all the tech companies access way back. Amazon has been harvesting national medical data.

Remember how much Russia was able to influence the 2016 election via Cambridge Analytica... TikTok has much more data on each user, collected over a longer period of time.

After listening to the stories my daughter “heard on tik-toc” I think it best to get rid of it. While all social media has problems this one seems to specialize in misinformation.

I can't stop feeling like this whole "watch out for Chinese apps" thing is like Peter Lorre in Casablanca cautioning people to watch out for pickpockets as he lifts their wallets.

I think it was someone else, but I'm blanking. I've only seen it 25 times or so…

TikTok like all other social media is an albatross of narcissism and mob mentality on the neck of the civilization of thoughtful discourse. Not necessarily more or less than Facebook or Twitter...

The data people don't realize these apps collect that is relevant isn't so much about your preference for viewing videos... which ones you might re-watch or comment on, but even when you scroll where you linger or where your pointer lines on a computer. More importantly, tho, they try to suck up all that location information because that's awesome for all kinds of targeted advertising and behavioral inference.

At the zoo.

At the clinic.
At that funny little bookshop.
At Starbucks.
ALL THE TIME.

Haha yeah no big deal!

But seriously, they'll trace your IP address to an approximate location, and possibly are also buying up and triangulating with cell tower data that egregiously is allowed to be sold by carriers to 3rd parties who then resell it. It is trivial for these tech companies to do that kind of data mining to identify and locate you.

None of this seems like a big deal until someone wants to target you. An enemy who wants to threaten you. A random who wants to stalk you. A state actor that wants to influence you. A terrorist that wants to radicalize you.

Here on MRF we are mostly savvy and at least moderately aware of the risks. There are so many out there who are not, and they can put each of us at risk.
