update on the G4 troubleshooting thread
#11
Well, I know the drives are good and the RAM is good. At least, I think I know they're good. Smile

I sold a DEAD hard drive, and advertised as DEAD for $70 on eBay. The guy needed that one type of drive to try to use the controller card off of it. Some people value things beyond what YOU can guess.

You push the power-button on the front of the Mac and it does nothing? Doesn't even chime?

'May sound silly, but have you tried using the power button on the keyboard?

Yes, that does sound silly, but having nothing else to lose I tried it (to no avail). I even tried plugging the keyboard into both USB ports to try it. No chime, no light, no nothing.

Yep, that is getting down to either the PS or the front panel board having gone bad as the more likely faults.

A partially bad front panel board can work from just the keyboard power button or just the power switch. That is why Doc's suggestion may sound silly, but does have a reason for trying it.

do you have a digital multi meter? I think there should be some +5V even when the computer is OFF (to power the USB keyboard), so poke around with the DMM if you know how it works and understand how to measure voltages properly. If you don't know the difference between a voltage measurement (where the DMM is in parallel to the component you are trying to measure) and current measurement (where the DMM is in series), then don't do it.

Did you ever do a CUDA reset? Asked before but no response.

Yup, did a CUDA reset. Don't have a digital multimeter. Removed and disconnected/reconnected then replaced the front panel housing and connector. No difference.

If it's a bad power supply, a different CPU wouldn't make a difference, would it?

No, that would not make a difference. i'm suggesting that you might have got duped by a CPU switch.

But still.... you'd hear something...

Did you remove CPU and RAM to see if you get a start or life? And/or Remove ATA cable from drive bus?
