EASY AS PIE, a slow pitch, and yet...

I thought it more like 88/89. But I could be mistaken.

Bring/take doesn't bother me. Now, itch/scratch does.

"Itch" for "scratch" - arrgh! My daughter's preschool teacher says that, and it drives me crazy. I don't want my kid learning that, but it's tedious to keep re-saying it correctly to her. Actually correcting the teacher would be more awkward than it's worth, though.
The other one that drove me crazy when I lived in the south was "waiting on" for "waiting for". As the song says, it's: "waiting on the levee, waiting for the Robert E. Lee".

I'd axe a grammer expert

What a timely post! I hear these two words interchanged WAY too often & it's one of those little things that bugs me (along with calling a cap a hat).
I understood the rule for correct usage in grammar school. It's not that difficult; take goes away; bring comes towards.

Dude...you don't even UNDERSTAND how much I hate the bring/take mistake. When I was in high school, the middle school letterboard across the street once said, "Remember to bring home your report cards this week". I was completely in shock that a school would make such a huge mistake and tried explaining it to other kids on the bus but they didn't get it. It still bothers the living hell out of me to this day.
Yeah, and that itch/scratch thing is bullsh*t. How in the world does that grammatical error happen? freeradical wrote: It means a lot because if they ever start to get lazy, the correct grammar is the first to go. Read 1984 or Farenheit 451? When society goes downward, it's usually because the language has deteriorated from laziness. Language is a set of rules that everyone maintains besides basic "do not steal, kill, etc" rules. If you don't respect premises as simple as "Ain't", it can start to show lack of care for other aspects of life. How many times have you been in McDonald's listening to the workers and realize they're in that socio-economic class and will probably never rise above it just because of language. Speaking properly makes a HUGE difference.

It's as if my kids just started using these words incorrectly two months ago. And each time they say it, I correct it, and they keep saying it, I keep correcting it...
Is this a sign of depression? Schizophrenia? I really, and truly am pissed off at it. And they run around like they have short term memory loss. But I love them to death. |
