Hackintosh thoughts, part 2
#21
I missed the 256 gig SSD in the middle of your build -- which is why it was $1700 -- which really makes the build closer to $1100 if you take that off...

And I agree with the "is 256 too big?" thought. For a MBP and its your only drive, I certainly understand that, but for a desktop, maybe not so much. Maybe half? My apps folder has CS3, CS4 master and CS5 master installed in it and we are only talking 30 gigs of stuff. System is only 5 gigs. Library is only 6.

fwiw, 16 gigs of ram for a new MP is only $300, not $480.

Agree with the 256-too-big comments. My boot drive is a 60GB SSD and has a sub-20GB Apps folder (same apps as jdc, in addition to a basic editing package, Aperture, Office 2008, Fireworks, Flash, DVDSP, Compressor, etc.) Library = 8GB, System = 5GB, Users (test/FUBAR user)= a few MB.

I'm using just over half of it, which is a more than comfortable allocation. User folder sits on a separate drive. Both backed up with Time Machine and imaged (separately) across the network also.

Wait for Sandy Bridge. Buy SSD now, then move it over.
