I don't think he was thrown off because of the pants, but because he cussed out the SW employee who asked him to pull them up. Once you fail to follow their instructions (reasonable or not) and act belligerent, they can throw you off the plane and the company will back them up, even if they later publicly apologize to the customer.
Armstrong is known for wearing skinny hipster jeans that sit on the hip bones; I've never seen a photo of him in baggy jeans. Without actually seeing what he was wearing, none of us can say whether it was appropriate or not. But once you tell a flight attendant to eff off, you're pretty much off the plane, regardless of fashion choices.
