The Jessye Norman one in the Bill Moyers' special hal linked to -- I saw that documentary what, fifteen, twenty years ago? It is an amazing 80 minutes. I just ordered the DVD -- thanks hal!

Anyhow, there's also a lovely recording of Don Edwards and and Waddie Mitchell -- Don Edwards is playing Amazing Grace on the guitar while Waddie Mitchell recites "Bronco Twister's Prayer" by cowboy poet Bruce Kiskaddon. (There's a bad video of it on YouTube, as well as a ripoff by somebody who should know better. You can buy a much better version on iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/bard-b...d358085864 )

Mahalia Jackson.

If you don't get goose pimples or tear up after hearing her version, you had better check for a pulse.

I vote for this one too! Though I love Judy Collins' version and especially love Aretha's version on her "Amazing Grace" album. About to check out Cat Power's version.

The most interesting to me is the Daniel Lanois/Aaron Neville one, although I bet it's either like or hate for most people (it's weird). Amazing grace is one of two songs I always have room in my head for a new rendition of (Take Five is the other). I'll have to check out all the versions. kj.

I can't say where it exists. It was a clip in some special I was watching on Aretha Franklin. It was from way back, early on when she was still singing in a choir. Young and with that raw talent of a legend in the making. Pipes that were far beyond anything you'd ever expect to be in a mere mortal.

Words from "Amazing Grace" sung to the music of "House of the Rising Sun" by The Animals (including the organ parts).
