Do they know if they found more or are these dying at the hospital?
This whole thing is just nearly unimaginable.

[quote Jp!]I'll just ask how does society say these people were supposed to defend themselves?

It's sad that people die from non-provoked attacks. Be it 20+ or just one. The reality is, it can happen, anywhere and everywhere. .
Please tell me you're not saying this tragedy was caused by not enough people being armed.

Our gun laws are among the very LEAST restrictive in the industrialized world, but we have FAR more than our share of these senseless massacres.

i just read this story before coming here. my eyes are teary as i try to explain to my son how limited a parent's power of protection really is. columbine filled me with the same sense of helplessness.

we can tell them not to drink and drive, have safe sex, and be wary of strangers. we can't shield them from a crazed gunman. none of us are safe in that regard.

Our friends' daughter goes to school there. I just IM'd her. Thank God she's safe!

For some reason, the picture of the young woman kneeling & crying out at Kent State (for those of us who are old enough to remember) popped into my head. No political inferences just "WHY?".

My god, the numbers are climbing even more?!

Nothing ever justifies anger, or its physical incarnation, destruction. But, life has always manifested this trait. It's an innate response to threatening circumstances. I don't think we can ever eliminate such acts from society, but nevertheless, society is partly responsible.

Let's not turn this into a political debate. I think we can all agree this is a horrible tragedy. Right now, it doesn't matter what caused this. People are dead. Many people are dead. If we need a thread for finger pointing, let's put one in the other board.

So you think your thoughts are worth twice as much as everyone else's? :p

But seriously: gads, this is horrible. 22 dead. That's a lot of senselessly curtailed lives to wrap one's head around, and that one person could be responsible for all that destruction is thoroughly depressing. My thoughts are with their families and the entire Virginia Tech community.
