A United Airlines version of 2 fer 1
#21
Racer- it's more to do with modern living vs. what our bodies were designed for. The simpler solution is then to ban all the elements of modern living and genetically engineer up a bunch of dire wolves and saber tooth tigers. Only the fast runners and good hiders would be able to reproduce. The rest of us fatties would be lunch.

Well, if it's a matter of being rational (if you weigh more, you should pay more), then why not have some sort of fair pricing rule? Meaning everyone pays the same for a seat? Of course, the airlines can do whatever they want, and we have the choice to do what we want as well. But if you start rationalizing seat sizes (BTW, I only take up one seat), then you should rationalize pricing as well.

This is ignorance masquerading as certainty.

Try "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by New York Times author Gary Taubes if you want to balance that ignorance with a little information.

all I have to say on the matter is that every human on this planet has a specific number of calories they need to take in every day as fuel to keep them functioning in any given 24 hour period. If they consume more than they "burn" they gain weight. If they consume less than they burn, they use up their fat reserves.

You can use any excuse you want to, but if you need to cut back on your food intake, and work out 12 times a week to lose weight, that is what you need to do. Unless you don't want to make the effort.

If you are taking in the exact number of calories that you burn ecvery day, you neither gain or lose. But 500 calories a day more or less is 1 pound a week, and 4 pounds a month. Skip a cookie and a few sugared sodas a day. It ads up.

yeah, metabolism and various endocrine problems can easily cause your individual mathematical equation to be different than mine, but if calories in is bigger than calories burned, you gain weight. ITS MATH PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sucks that some people's equations are brutal.

I don't consider myself judgemental on the subject. I lived it. I have been between 160 and 240 in the past 2 decades, and am back down to about #190 right now. I lived side by side with a woman who climbed up to #300, and clawed her way back down to #200. Its just easier to sit on the couch eating the Haagen Daz than it is to go out and exercise, and eat healthy.

Life is choices. Take responsability for who and what you are. If you are unhappy, CHANGE IT. I am incredibly patient, supportive and compassionate. Heck, even my ex-wife will tell you that. I just don't go to pity parties.

I know people process 100 calories of cane sugar differently than 100 calories of high fructose corn syrup, even vs 100 calories of cod. That's all part of figuring out your personal "equation" different food ratios and combinations yield a different end result.

Once again, my ex lost 1/3 of her weight. been there, watched it, helped make it happen.

but i think it's arrogance to generalize that to absolutely everyone else. i worked hard to reduce my weight by 1/4 - 50 lbs. i know what it took for me to do it. i don't assume that all obese people have access to the same resources or fortitude to do so. yes, i do wish it were otherwise but compassion allows for a less judgmental view.

Oh, I agree. But the number of those who claim some sort of "medical condition" vs the number who actually DO have some sort of medical condition (mental or physical) is far far different. My ex is insulin-resistant. But she acknowledges that isn't an excuse, just another mitigating factor that she needs to fight against, not give up because of.

Good for them. If you're so fat that you have to raise the armrest and take up some of my seat, you should have to buy two tickets for two seats. Or pay for half of mine.

Losing weight isn't easy. Staying fit isn't easy. Yet some who bristle at the simple "eat less" advice nevertheless underestimate the work I put into staying in shape. It's a choice I make every day.

Yes, I ate some Rolos after lunch. I also spent an hour at the gym this morning. If I hadn't gone to the gym, I wouldn't have had the Rolos. Or the bread & butter with my Lean Cuisine, for that matter. If I stop going to the gym, but continue eating crap, I'll gain weight. That would be a choice, not some biological default. Most fit adults work at it.

The way I see it, you can't maintain your weight, not precisely. You're either gaining weight, or losing it. If you eat right, do 2 or 3 hours of cardio per week, and 1 or 2 hours of weight training, you'll lose a whopping 2 or 3 pounds a month. People try it for a month or two, get discouraged, and give up. But in a year, would you rather be 10 pounds heavier or 20 pounds lighter? You really do get to choose -- and whichever way you go, it is your choice. Whichever way you've been going, that was your choice.

The argument over carbs vs fats is a red herring. If you want to lose weight, you will. If you want to be fat, you will.

agreed. Like I said. Just 500 calories a day is 52 pounds a year. People look at 80 pounds, and think it will never happen, and don't even try.

Hell, one soda a day is a pound a month. Cut back just ONE soda a day and lose 12 pounds in a year. (or gain 12 pounds less in that year)

How many years did it take to put it on? It may take more than a few weeks to make it go away.

Looks like public opinion is currently running 82% in favor, 18% against this new policy.

Also - look on the positive side. People who purchase two tickets should also be given two of everything, including double meals & double drinks. That should keep them happy...
