Do you think we'll have another dark age(s)? Or are we past that kind of stuff?

I figure we'll have a mammoth disaster of some type or other in the next century or three, of our own making or natural, that will go a long way toward hitting the restart button. There will be small to medium sized pockets of 'Holy cr*ap! All that technology stuff must have caused this/didn't save us, it must be BAD JUJU!'.

But I suspect the majority of the remaining will be much more of the mindset of "Noooo... Where the frak is the frakking omninet??? How long till we can watch Survivor Death Race Project Top Chef Wives of American Idols again??? We've got to get this thing up and running again NOW. Somebody get on Yahoogling and find out what kind of trees we need to make Starbucks...'.

Temples will be raised to Martha Stewart and Norm Abraams*.

* Though videos of the One True Savior, Roy Underhill, will be what will really jump start our long trek back to In and Out Burgers dotting the nation's landscape.

well, if they have temples of Norm, perhaps that's too bad afterall. Now if Norm 'does' Martha on a temple, revenge of the nerds!!!

Past that kind of stuff. We have an incredible amount of knowledge tucked away in books that nearly half the planet's inhabitants can read. We have lots of possibilities for energy sources, and if one starts to become scarce, the price will rise enough that we'll conserve it. We are remarkably resourceful primates.

The things to worry about are a serious pandemic or a big volcanic eruption that would reduce sunlight in the temperate zones for part of a growing season. But even in those cases, we are now such an interconnected, intercontinental society that aid could easily flow to those affected.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Nothing signals coming dark ages like people getting iPhones and high definition TVs.

Nothing signals coming dark ages like people getting iPhones and high definition TVs. It's called an "ELE" (pronounced "ellie" ). Extinction Level Electronics. They did that movie about it years ago, with Morgan Freeman, "Cheap Impact". Apple discontinued its exclusive with AT&T and heavily subsidized iPhones finally became available through multiple carriers and, *bam*, suddenly society was on the verge of collapse. But civilization was saved at the last minute when Steve Jobs decided texting and fart apps weren't needed anymore and Apple killed both in a new iPhone software update. All of the sudden people started using their phones just to make phone calls and we were saved.

For me, the signal of the impending Dark Ages was rise of Sarah Palin during the last year's election along with the Cult of Know Nothingismâ„¢ that followed her. It was appalling to witness so many people being able to blindly go against scientific proven fact and saying the earth was only 6,000 years old or whatever. And...and...wanting someone in power who believed it as well.

And yes, ztirffritz is right. During the Dark Ages we know (and focus) about in Western history, while Europe was thumbing its asses and not washing its hands to avoid a plague, the rest of the world figured out engineering, calculus, cartography, gun powder and washing its hands.
