Mold grows very well in a humidifier - not recommended.
I'd get a steam vaporizer - about $15 at your local store. Warm moist air from a steam vaporizer is much better on your lungs than cold moist air from a humidifier.

Horizontal can be tougher on the lungs.

If mold is present: but I am fine in the morning - Mold could be in one area of home but not in BR. if we had mold, wouldn't that make me more sick? - Depends on the strain. Plus, we had the house inspected a few month ago when we bought it. no mold at that time. - Mold can develop in just a few days. just my 2ยข, but if you cannot find another cause for the coughing, get your home checked out. Especially since you stated it only occurs at home in the evening. Be well and take care of yourself and your loved ones!

What room are you in when you tend to cough - may be carpeting, a plant, some other fabric unique to that room. Otherwise you would cough all night as well if it were mold being dispersed by the heating system. It has to be room specific.

You probably have a chest or throat infection that is a virus. From my experience I have noticed that when I have any type of virus that gives a cough, fever or chills it is dependent on the time of day for when it is most virulent. I think of a virus like a bunch of garden ants. Some times of the day you may not see one then later they are everywhere. You can use this information to kill the virus. You determine when the problem is noticeable and for most people this may be around 5 or 6pm. You can be waiting with a hammer! Or in this case something like Theraflu which contains Acetaminophen. This, we are told is a fever reducer but in reality if you take a powdered Theraflu in warm water (lemon is best) and then get into bed with double the blankets you will sweat like a horse for about 2 hours. And I mean sweat. Depending on the virus your bed cloths and bed sheets may be soaking wet. After a shower you may feel remarkably well. This is a well known fix in England were I grew up. The product over there is Lemsip but its the same ingredient. You will be back to normal very fast although you may have to repeat the process for 2 or 3 evenings.
