This is horrible, and I am in no way excusing the perpetrators or blaming the victims: but am I the only person here who would NEVER let total strangers come to my home to buy a valuable item?

That would likely give you the upper hand in the bargaining negotiations, too.

No felony murder in Washington?
No need to prove who pulled the trigger, just that they were there (part of a robbery) while someone died.

Is there any state with misdemeanor murder? Or are you thinking capital crime? And no, kj, you are not alone.

We certainly have a provision for death penalty cases in Washington, and this one would qualify. Personally, I'm opposed to going for the death penalty, but my objections are economic rather than moral. Sentencing someone to death might "feel good", but it's extremely expensive revenge. Do some research on the costs of the long series of appeals as opposed to what it would cost to simply incarcerate someone for life. As a taxpayer in the county in which these people will be prosecuted, I'd rather see my money go for something more worthwhile. Besides, keeping them locked up forever gives them a really, really long time to kick themselves for screwing up big time and ruining so many lives, including their own.
