Canon S95 or Canon G12. I have the S95 and am very happy with it. I carry this when I don't want or can't carry my Canon T2i.
so I need a *compact* middle-range P/S camera to capture my kids

How is a camera like the Canon G12 considered "middle-range" if it costs $500?
You can buy an entry level DSLR and a kit lens for less than that.

More than a $100 and you are outside your range.

How about this inexpensive camera. It even has a 1/1.8" sensor.

I just travelled with a few other folks and they all had little P/S Canons.
Same one too without consulting each other. I thought they were S750 but when I look that up that wasn't it. Didn't take AA batteries as the charged batteries were often dead at the end of the day ( leaving the camera on all day didn't help) Looked more like the Elph series but they were 10 mpixel not 12 (older model ?) I was quite impressed with both the shots they got and the LCD screen on the back. I like lugging my D80 around but it can be a pain in the arse in crowds and such and these new small cameras take some wonderful pics even in some not so great conditions. Looked an awful lot like the Elph300. Another possible advantage to a pocketable camera is you aren't a target to all these people that go out and buy a D50, D300, or whatever and have absolutely no clue how to use it , take off on vacation and grab anyone else holding a Nikon for pointers. (either that or I get hit on a lot) :-) |
