I snickered at that. My father had a PhD in Geology, and was a University Professor. So we called him "Doctor". And, at parties, he would regularly be buttonholed by a grande dame who would begin the conversation with "Doctor , I have this pain.."

His patented response was "Madam, unless you are made entirely out of rocks, I cannot help you. I am a Professor of Geology."
