Musicians you just don't get
#1
Strictly speaking about musical abilities, among the famous and lauded pop/rock/folk/country musicians (performers or bands), are there any you just cannot understand what all the fuss is/was about?

I'll start the ball rolling (an incur the wrath of their faithful, no doubt) with Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash.

If you didn't know who was performing (a tough assignment, I know,) this would verge on the un-listenable, especially their "harmonies":

Oh, that's EASY.

Pretty much ANY teenybopper 'musician'. Especially ones with non Alpha characters in their names. Blech.

Sure, and this is probably heretical to most people. I never understood why Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and Bruce Springsteen were so fawned over by the music press. I like a few of their songs, but to me, Dylan has a voice like nails on a chalkboard and sung bland tunes that ended up becoming overloaded with many of the musical excesses and self-absorption of the 1970s. Frank Zappa....nope, I don't get it at all. Unlistenable. I like Bruce Springsteen as a person and a citizen, but his music is standard NJ bar band schlock. He just got discovered at the right time by the right person.

I enjoyed the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds but would never consider it a masterpiece.

Feel free to call me a cretin (which is far more enjoyable to me, IMHO).

Bob Dylan was a great songwriter but a terrible singer.

Same with Neil Young, same with Kurt Cobain. Not that they are not all brilliant in their own right.

My current ??? is Bon Iver. Everyone seems to love them but I don't see the appeal.

This is especially odd considering I am a lifelong NJ resident.

Really? I like Springsteen. To each his own.
