Unless you are sending a large attachments, email should be fine. Likewise, IM, Messages, and A-GPS locking should be fine. I can understand someone quibbling with web browsing, but sticking to mobile sites makes the experience tolerable.
I still use EDGE quite a bit. Saving battery life is the main reason I toggle off 3.5G. Such basic connected services that I described work well enough. No real complaints. I would be ecstatic to have free EDGE speed connectivity, say 256kbps down. Option to buy faster access would be fine as an upsell
