Did Apple Change Its Networking Protocol with Mt Lion?
#1
Since installing Mountain Lion on my iMac, it cannot connect to my OS 9.1 G3 over the local network, and vice-versa. I get this message on the iMac:

There was a problem connecting to the server. . . wrote:
The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem.

The two used to see each other, with the iMac running Snow Leopard.

Thanks AA! I saved that page in my IT folder for reference.

I had been trying to copy a folder from the G3 to my daughter's legacy iBook via the iMac, and was getting frustrated. Finally I remember to look at the G3's IP address, copy that into the server browser on the iBook, and got the two together directly.

But there are times when I need to copy something off the old blue-and-white G3, so that page will be helpful.

Wow, this problem drove me CRAZY when I upgraded to Lion two years ago, and suddenly the NAS with ...all... my files in it suddenly disappeared.

It took a long time to figure out what had changed, which included having to boot from the (slow, non-SSD) backup drive. The fact that network settings could be adjusted to allow the old protocol was apparently not known, and I ended up spending a lot of time and money replacing the NAS and figuring out how to move the files from the old NAS to the new one.

It cost me probably $500 and 15 hours of prime summer time.

There are three results.
(1) I have a much nicer NAS, which is good, but I ended up spending a lot of time and money when it was not convenient to me, which was not good;
(2) After some growing pains, I am on Lion, and I generally like it especially for the closer integration with the iPad and iPhone (ie, Contacts), but
(3) I will never, ever, ever again be an early adopter of OS updates.

don't forget the Microsoft<>Apple back-and-forth about Sync Services, Outlook, and iCloud.

In short: it won't work. used to, doesn't now. Each company blames the other.

Works great on a Windows PC, though.
