...thought I would make a note that I'm still using the same razor that I had been using then, and still using the same methods as I mentioned.

It does work. I also use the hair on my arms as a kind of strop, running the razor backwards up each arm 25 to 30 times after each shave.
I use a Gillette Fusion razor, and each cartridge will last several months.
I rarely use shaving cream or gel, but will sometimes put lotion on before shaving, of course at the moment I have a full beard for the winter, but I still shave my neck and trim the edges.
