Finder Question

I've been going through many files recently using the finder's 3 paned window. I adjust the panes' width to clearly see the file names, however, when I close and reopen the window, the width changes don't stick. Is there a technique to make that happen?

In OS9 windows opened and closed in the exact same position and size they previously held. I'm not sure why OSX hasn't adopted the same concept. I'm constantly re-sizing windows and moving them around.

You might look at http://cocoatech.com/pathfinder/ which is a finder replacement. Or utilize Mountain Lion's tabbed finder feature. I've found that alleviates most of my frustrations with finder windows.
