FWIW, Air 2s only come in 16 or 64.
And 128.
Mom probably doesn't need that much.

Any huge downside to getting mom a refurb iPad Air vs iPad Air 2?

As the OS gets more bloated she'll want more than 16GB'S. 16 is pushing it now with much other stored on it.

Avoid the 16Gb anything....

My former goto iPad3 had 64G with 10G free, at the moment.
I want to put more ALAC music on it and some HD movie, and that would have eaten up a lot of that headroom. And streaming doesn't work that well for me. So I got the 128, which will likely be more than I need, over the life of the A2, but now I don't have to pick and choose. But 16G? I would think that takes a lot of will power, diligence, and a good WiFi network to pull that off. I've heard that corporate environments would use 16G for a lot of employees.

...the Air is 16/32 only.
A refurbed, 32G air might suit Mom just fine. The Air 2 makes more use of some 9.1 stuff such as split-screen multitasking. I don't know if the Air can pull that off. Unless she's pretty adapt, A refurbed, 32G air might suit Mom just fine. Maybe even 16G, but I'd go with the larger.

Email, Words With Friends, Facebook. That's 98% of her usage. There's a Merrill Lynch app she wants to access that requires fairly recent OSes.
She gets confused about how to log into an external network if she goes with my aunt to the beach, etc. I've considered T-Mobile's 200 MB for life plan. I also considered just giving her one of those Wifi hotspots and letting her keep her current iPad for now.

The Air 2 has 2GB of RAM.
If web surfing is going to be a frequent task, and it probably is, unless you like page reloads (Safari), or browser crashes (others), the Air 2 is the way to go. It is the single most annoying thing about my Air. Jetsam event errors constantly litter my logs. Some of the UI animations are jerky as well, but I can live with them. Flash storage issues can be handled. Insufficient memory cannot.

The cameras on the Air2 are a big jump over the Air.
FWIW- I use both regularly. For my applications, both are great. |
