I dropped my phone off the edge of a dock into 3.5 feet of murky lake water. There is a steel plate between the phone and the case that goes with a dashboard magnetized holder. I'm looking at strong neodymium magnets to try and fish it out. This one:
neodymium magnet has a pull force of 69 lbs. Is that too strong? Would it break the glass?

The phone is in 3 feet of water and you worry about breaking the glass? You should be lucky if you get your data back.

It's quite possible if your phone rests against an old lawn mower engine it could be caught between the two and it's bend ability field tested.

Do you have any dead hard drives around, there's a fairly strong magnet in those (especially the 3.5" drives) if you want to take it apart. Quicker than ordering something.

Thank you for your responses. I didn't realize the magnets in a hard drive were that powerful. I have a recent backup, so I'm not concerned about the data. I will update if I retrieve it.

Good luck!
My bet is that you have now left what will become a million credit archaeological find in 100,000 years...

Stupid question, why can't you jump in the 3.5 feet of water and fish it out yourself???
Granted unnecessary technology is a LOT more fun....
