What's the minimum RAM you would get with a new computer?

I put 16gb in my mini, doesn't seem to make much difference until there's heavy lifting involved, but also has SSD. My iPad mini2 seems to work alright with 1gb, but that's probably iOS.

Soldered=max
Non-soldered=min and add what I needed when I needed it.

Yep.

My new iMac 27 came with 8.

After a couple OWC garage sales, it was up to 32!

Which reminds me...I have 8 GB (2x4GB) of iMac RAM (1867MHZ PC3-14900) I need to put in the "For Sale" section

I agree - if not soldered the minimum through the provider and I'll upgrade it post-haste to the maximum with my own, less expensive 3rd party SO-DIMMs. If soldered... I'd probably move along to a different hardware model, but 16GB is my minimum.

I'm usually maxed out just from surfing and leaving dozens of tabs open.

Well, if you were to buy a nice shiny new 2015 27" iMac, "max ram" is 64 GB, which runs a cool $800.... =)

Unless you were thinking about anything photo or video then I would go more.

And, all of them are soldered, except for the 27" iMac and MP.

Tim Cook is going to squeeze Apple into a much smaller company as soon as there is a misstep with the iPhone. And there will be. And a lot of people like me won't be there to support them like in the past.
