I have the original Apple Watch and most days I have 30% power when I go to sleep around 11pm. If I use it to track exercise it can be lower. I have only run out of power early twice in the last year and a half I have owned it. Charging it while I'm sleeping is no more difficult than charging my iPhone while I'm sleeping. In fact they sit right next to each other at night. My only complaint about the battery life is that I do have to carry the propriety charger with me even on an overnight trip. I wouldn't go without it though. I find it very useful.

Not true, Newt. People are repeating what they've heard in the Internet echo chamber. People that actually own the Apple Watch rarely have issues with the device's battery life.

Seven hours into my day, I have 87% battery life. I'm impressed! I don't know if it's because it's Series 1 versus Series 2 for if it's 38 versus 42 mm.

I work out 5 days a week for about two hours a day. My Apple watch is tracking my activity the entire time (heart rate monitor is active).

I put my watch on at about 5 AM and put it on the charger at about 9 PM.

It has never been below 30% when I put it on the charger. It's usually about 40-50% charged.

Mine is the original, and not a Series 1, though.

I can usually get two and maybe three days out of a charge on my series 1 Apple Watch.

When I finally went to bed last night (later than usual--10pm), I had 63% battery left. I'm impressed!
Note: My previous watch was the "original" but I referred to it as Series 1.

......saw that but they say battery life still stinks......

No, it does not. I end the day with at least 30% battery remaining on mine.
Who is "they"?

Mine is well over a year old, and battery will last two days if I happen to forget to charge it. I have no complaints.
