....USAA........no minimum......they print checks for free [ many banks don't do this anymore ].....I link to basic savings locally......then you can transfer funds to USAA for free.....if you need to deposit cash or checks immediate.....you deposit at the local bank then just transfer.....

Does the CU have to be local?
We belong to a couple that are out of state, but use cooperating institutions for in-person transactions.
Works reliably enough, well, except the closest place (3-4 blocks) doesn't validate for the building's expensive parking lot, and the 15 minutes of free parking isn't enough if/when there's a line. The less convenient places validate. The benefits of the CU's outweigh any minor inconveniences.

So I’d need to learn what kinds of out of are CUs don’t require and affiliation to be a member? USAA ... do they not have online check deposits? I haven’t walked into a bank or deposited at at ATM in a long time. When the odd check comes in my bank’s app snaps a picture.

Also recommend a local credit union.

As my older kids moved away, the joint accounts I opened for them have made it really easy to send them money when they needed it.

You can deposit checks through their app. Also, in the oddest of shopping centers not far from me, a USAA ATM was installed. Only one I've ever seen in the wild.

And just do a quick search on credit unions near you. Each will have an online site where you can find if you qualify. I think you'll find it's much easier than you are anticipating. I remember the days where CUs had hoops. Most of the hoops are gone now or at least HUGE!

You could do a two-fer and look for a high-interest checking account if you're willing to jump through a minimum-swipe and other requirements.

Dodd-Frank ... I had no idea that created this circumstance. Very interested, and yes we use our debit cards for most things. I can see how a few of the choices there could work.

I use Connexus Credit Union for the higher CD rates, but they also have good checking. You just need to have a savings account with $5 to stay a member. Otherwise I have NO other connections to it.
