Either Edwards or Obama is fine by me, though I've started leaning back towards Edwards of late. I'd hold my nose and vote for Hillary if it came to that -- I agree we don't need another political dynasty. Bill Richardson would make a good VP candidate. Pretty moderate overall, very strong on diplomacy. He'd go a long ways towards restoring our credibility overseas.

[quote cbelt3]Yet again, our defective election system makes a bunch of yahoos in Iowa the most important people in the US.
I'd rather see a primary run just like the main election- all at the same time across the US, none of this inky dinky state pushing one candidate above the other. I've been saying the same thing about holding them all on the same day. It's idiocy to do it the way they do now. (as for Iowa being a bunch of Yahoos, I may secretly believe that but wouldn't state it publicly ;-) What I will say is that compared to many states they aren't exactly what one would refer to as culturally diverse and thus don't represent what we as a country are supposed to).

[quote (vikm)] Each of the news shows all raved about Obama's speech afterward and noted that Bill looked "devastated" as he stood by Hillary during her same old "stump speech".
It's gonna be really interesting. Obama's speech was a buncha nothing, and Bill looked a bit tired but in no way "devastated".

Elitist snobs ? No kidding. Iowa's exactly what it should be--part of our diverse country. No reason everywhere has to be a dang junior 'frisco, or something. Unless he meant it isn't a representative sample, which would make more sense. Of course, I don't know if any state would be a representative sample of the U.S. As far as Hillary, I haven't seen anything that would indicate where she stands, on anything. It's frustrating to try to find any substance in what she says. I can't imagine that people like that. kj.

I worked in Iowa in 1983/84 (about 6 months - Dem Primary season) and found Iowa to be much more diverse than I thought. Especially Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo. I loved it there. I lived in L.A. at that time (home town). I still have my friends there after all this time.

It's NOT about Iowans, it's about the process. Caucusing has as much in common with voting as baby formula has with mothers milk, while they may look alike they are not the same thing.
To caucus in Iowa means pre regeristering and giving up an entire day or evening. It's for the committed. Lacksidasical doesn't cut it there. If you caucus you are a soldier in the army of Huckabee or Mitt or Hillary or Edwards or Obama or anyone else you choose to support. It's less an election than a poll of committed supporters. The impressive thing in this election was the number of commited Deocrats doubled while the number of commited Republicans declined by almost the same margin. Bad news for the right. |
