[quote jdc]why is everyone all atwitter over blu-ray?
im assuming you mean as storage, right?
cause im not seeing a lot of people running out to buy evan almighty on blu-ray to watch on their mac?
That is the point. People are hoping that Apple will fix the gaping hole in the OS that prevents them from watching Blu-Ray movies on a Mac.

Blu-ray would be useful for burning those HD home movies as well, of course.

[quote incognegro]Is this the Penryn?
I am pretty sure Harpertown is Penryn in Xeon form (Socket 771).

is that a big market of people? i mean blu-ray discs are $10+ more than a standard DVD -- and who would want to watch all that high res imagery on a 20" screen when you have a 46" screen in the living room?
for storage -- i get it -- but for movie viewing on my mac -- i dont

I don't get the push for Blu-Ray on a Mac, either.

Lots of people watch DVDs on their 32"+ HD TVs being run by a Mac mini. I am guessing they want to be able to watch the Blu-Ray discs they see at the video store on the same screen with the mini after adding a Blu-Ray drive.

The Mac Pros are still too expensive. Those should be down around $1700 - $1900, not 1K more than that. Why are there no more C2D or Xenon options to bring the price down?
I would bet that most of the Mac Pros are going to be running Apple's Pro apps anyway, so by the time I add in Final Cut Pro Studio, Logic Studio, Aperture, and Shake, with a $2800 Mac Pro, I'm right around $5400. That's a cool $5400 right into Apple's pocket, meaning it's all Apple product. I know that's been the entry point for a while, but it's pretty steep for me. That price doesn't even include Adobe CS3...
Blu-Ray should be an option, I didn't config. one, so I don't know if Apple offers it as a BTO.

No, I think we are talking about video since Toast 8 can already do Blu-Ray data. I for one would love to be able to put my HD movies made with iMovie HD or Final Cut Pro HD onto an HD medium like Blu-Ray. PCs can already burn to BD-R, so why is Apple holding back?

There's a quad core option for $2299. Apple just wants apparently everyone in this thread to pay $2800 instead of reconfiguring down to $2300.

[quote incognegro]$2900 for a dual G4 1.25 GHz / 512 RAM / 120 HD.
Not new, refurbished.
My point never was that the latest boxes are overpriced, only that I miss the days when you could get into a tower for under $2K; and that was mostly further back than 2002 and the pre-gigahertz days (Though as late as 2003 you could get a G5 1.6 box for $1800 for awahile and the DP 1.25 Firewire snuck in under the tent at $1999).
I wouldn't turn back the clock, even if I could, just to get price over progress, but I wouldn't be a cheap deal hunter if I didn't miss lower prices at least a little. ;-)
