Surely I'm not this dumb. What in the heck is Critical Race Theory?

When I read about it, my eyes glaze over and I give up on it.

I think this is a good summary:

https://www.edweek.org/leadership/what-i...ck/2021/05

Critical race theory is an academic concept that is more than 40 years old. The core idea is that racism is a social construct, and that it is not merely the product of individual bias or prejudice, but also something embedded in legal systems and policies.

The rest of the article goes into the history and rationale for this "academic concept". (Trumplicans: academic concepts are the evilzz!)

Here's a nice article that summarizes the basis of it and why it's important: https://www.cnn.com/2021/05/27/us/critic...index.html

Short version of the reason to oppose critical race theory:

There's no need to change anything in American society to combat racism because there is no such thing as systemic racism and everything is just hunky dory. It's just a few bad apples who are inherently racist. Never mind them.

Pretty much the "moderate" Trumplican view. The not so moderate Trumplicans are happy to embrace their racism.

So, sociologically speaking, CRT is the man?

A rebranding of the phrase systematic racism. It helps obfuscate the issue and keep the base scared.

I think a good non eye glazing summary is simply that the success of the USA was greatly dependent on slavery (and later other limitations of freedom of minorities) and that much of this system is actually still in place today and needs to be addressed.

I'm sorry. I see "CRT" and the first thing that comes to mind is cathode-ray tube. :oldfogey:
