I was starting to feel guilty for not inviting my friend to stay at my place, especially after reading the comments here when the phone rang. It was her letting me know they were passing through town & did I want to meet them somewhere. Did I know of a McDonald's close to an exit off I-59? Sure I did! I Googled the location & gave her the exit number & told her I'd meet them there.
I went to school with this woman at Mississippi State then at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. After graduating she moved into a garage apartment down the street from me & eventually we became best friends. Later she moved to New Orleans & I went to Birmingham via Minneapolis. The last time I saw her was during Mardi Gras in 1991 but we talk on the phone & email each other regularly. I was very concerned when I lost touch with her after Katrina but she called within a couple of weeks & told me she was fine & her house suffered very little damage. This didn't surprise me at all because that's just the sort of luck this woman has.
McDoanld's was packed out with evacuatees & I didn't have to wait long before they showed up. It was GREAT seeing her & I gave her a big hug then heard a gruff voice say, "You'd better stop manhandling my woman." It was her girlfriend, who I've spoken to on the phone a few few times but never met. From the look on her face, I couldn't help but believe she was serious. I laughed & extended my hand as she just stood there glaring at me. My friend introduced us but clearly the damage had been done. This woman had taken a total dislike towards me simply because I hugged an old friend! It wasn't like I was groping her in the parking lot!
The mega-bitch went inside to order food while we stayed outside talking then their traveling companion came out & I met her. They were on their way to her grandmother's farm on the north side of Gadsden so I didn't have to feel guilty about not inviting them to stay with me. Eventually the evil girlfriend came out & announced that they'd better get back on the road. I asked my friend to please call me when they got back to NO then came home.
I feel like I dodged a bullet on that one because I can't imagine having that evil creature stay in my house.
