does anyone know why in this picture (BW warning http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/image/0...ch_big.jpg) there are 3-4 horizontal bands across the Moon?

Yeah, I think Bill's got it - looks like either light cloud wisps or smog layers... since its LA, it's probably the latter. Here we had all clouds, but the next night the skies were mostly clear. g=

It's amazing you can even see the moon in LA with all of the light pollution there.
