Tax Day! What we pay and where it goes compared to other countries.

G's including state and city taxes. Not everybody lives where city/state taxes are low and/or non-existent. My state and city taxes are effectively 9%. And since everybody takes their own bite, the results are somewhat additive (Ok, I deduct city and state on my federal, but it's not much.)

how many people here have city/municipal taxes in addition to any state taxes? (some states with no income tax, obviously)

Part of the property tax on our home goes to the city. It's a relatively small part, less than a hundred dollars a year. The city gets a nice cut of the sales tax, too. The city charges for individual services like sewer and water, garbage disposal/recycle as well as a fee for our street lights. The city also gets to put a tax on our utility bill.

We have state and municipal income tax, my wife's city income tax withholding is more than she pays the state. Also, though not all do, school districts can levy income tax in Ohio, in addition to the revenue they get from property tax. Plus we have sales tax with state, county and municipal components.

We have substantial city taxes and "fees" (i.e. taxes under a different name). They get added to our property tax bills. Most of this is to make up for the cost of state services that have been cut since imposition of Prop 13 way back when.
