My father quit his 3 pack a day habit the day after his stroke. My sister continues to smoke like a chimney (even though her mother died from smokers emphysema) and I am forbidden to talk to her about quitting. She doesn't see any harm in letting her 2 kids and others around her enjoy the second hand smoke she produces and refuses to go outside to smoke. I don't visit much because I can't breathe when I'm there and when I leave I have to immediately change my clothes from the butt stink that has permeated them.
I on the other hand never picked up this nasty habit.... but I have been known to occasionally pick at my ass in public.

It's been about eight+ years for me. What a waste! Cigarettes were included with Army rations as late as '69-70. I can't stand the smell now.

I smoked about 3 cigarettes in my life. Probably around 12 or 13 years old. Did it to try an be "cool".
Glad it did not become a habit.
My dad smoked 3 packs a day of unfiltered Camel cigarettes for over 50 years. He quit after his first stroke.
My mom never smoked.

In CA its illegal to smoke in the car if there are kids in the car as well.
I cant stand the smell, and of course our next door neighbors are Russian immigrants that smoke like chimneys. Outside. some foul smelling euro brand something or other. ugh.
Cant even open the windows on that side of my house unless they arent home, and they always are.

I've never had one in my mouth. My Dad smoked since he was 12 until he was in his late 60's and finally
got enough of a scare to stop. He served in WWII and said he believes some would not have came home
if it weren't for all those Lucky Strikes, someone got in jam they would ask for a cigarette to help calm
them down. If I had been in the same situation I may have smoked too who knows. Done my share
drinking in younger years though. I have often wondered what a really good cigar would be like.

We are at a wedding in California this weekend. I'm amazed at how many young people are smoking. These are urban professionals...supposedly they should know better. Actually, they all admit to knowing better, but they do it anyway. What gives?

I am cheap enough that I would have quit when a carton hit ~$30. I never smoked since both my parents did and I hated coming home from sports practice after school to a layer of smoke in the living room. My dad quit at about 58 after a biopsy scare. My mom kept up until about 74, and cut down to about a pack a month, then two a week. She still uses the gum in her 80's.
